as her two daughters looked on,
authorities and family members said Sunday.
Willy
Canturencia, 28, was so ruthless that after stabbing Toribia
Henriquez, 35, in front of her children, he followed the dying woman
into the hallway of their Mount Eden apartment building, where she
collapsed in blood and repeatedly knifed her again, law-enforcement
sources said.
The [older] daughter ran out and knocked on the neighbor’s door,
screaming, ‘Help! My mother’s being stabbed!’ ” said a resident,
Jamaira Gonzales, 34.
Cops said Henriquez and Canturencia got into a dispute in their
Walton Avenue apartment just before 1 a.m. The enraged man then
picked up a knife and plunged it into Henriquez in front of her two
daughters, ages 17 and 2, sources said.
Gonzales, who lives two floors below the couple, said she could hear
someone upstairs yelling, “Stop, man, don’t do that! Don’t kill your
wife!”
Canturencia “was gone for about six months, and about a month ago,
he came back around,” Gonzales said. “He drinks a lot. Maybe he was
jealous about something.”
As
Henriquez lay dead in the blood-covered hallway, her boyfriend
turned the knife on himself, slitting his own throat and wrists in
front of horrified neighbors, witnesses said.
The victim’s cousin recalled seeing Canturencia just minutes before
the attack.
“I saw him downstairs smoking a cigarette, and then later, I heard
yelling and running,” she said.
Police said that they had responded to five prior domestic incidents
involving the couple and had arrested Canturencia each time.
The suspect was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was being
treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He was charged with
murder, assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon,
police said.
